Q2 2024: Key Employee and Partner Human Capital Topics and Trends for U.S. Law Firms

The Professional Services Practice at Aon recently deployed a pulse survey of our law firm clients to gather data about how large law firms are thinking about a variety of human capital topics.

Background

The survey topics were chosen by reviewing recent benchmarking requests from clients and consultants. Specifically, the survey covered leadership views toward benefits, the prevalence and effectiveness of certain point solutions, developments in wellbeing initiatives, adoption of lifestyle benefits, and plan governance.

All respondents were either “Am Law 200” firms or firms based outside the United States with gross global revenues in the Am Law 200 range (currently from $126 million to $7.2 billion).

Background

The results show that law firms are responding to changes in the economy, the political and regulatory environment, and the talent market by taking several strategic actions:

  • Carefully limiting investments to the areas of greatest need
  • Focusing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives on the areas of highest impact
  • Cultivating a culture of wellbeing and matching attorneys and staff with the resources they need
  • Reviewing plan governance processes

While we expect these trends to continue through 2024, the last few years have demonstrated that law firm leaders recognize the need to be agile and respond decisively to events like court decisions, election outcomes, and global conflicts.
