Not sure what to purchase? Read below for a description of the coverages available:
Coverage included in your Professional Liability Insurance
Professional Liability
Coverage you against allegations of malpractice while performing chiropractic treatment. Also includes Legal Expenses Coverage and Criminal Defense Costs Reimbursement.
Example: An improper adjustment of a patient results in them being injured and, you are then sued for negligence.
Legal expenses
Provides you with coverage for complaints filed with the provincial regulatory boards including professional misconduct, sexual abuse or sexual harassment. The insurer will provide coverage for legal expenses applicable to any disciplinary/investigation proceedings with a regulator/provincial college.
Criminal defense costs reimbursement
Covers you for costs to defend certain charges under the criminal code. Since criminal acts are excluded in the main policy, the insurer does not have the duty to defend. With this extension, the insurer will pay on the insured's behalf, provided that:
- the criminal charge arises from the individual's practice in Canada, and
- the insured individual is found not guilty of the criminal charge.
Optional coverages
Commercial General Liability
Provides coverage against allegations of bodily injury or property damage to a third party. The policy will pay to investigate the claim, defend your interests, and pay any damages for which you are found legally liable.
As well, if you are working as an independent contractor for a clinic, that clinic's Commercial General Liability may not cover you in the event of a claim. Having your own coverage just makes sense.
Example: A patient slips and falls while entering the clinic where you are practicing and suffers a broken leg. If you are named in a resulting lawsuit, Commercial General Liability coverage will defend and indemnify you.
Legal Entity
Legal Entity coverage extends Professional Liability to protect the clinic in the event the clinic is named in a malpractice claim involving an employee or owner of the clinic. The cost for this coverage is based on the number of professionals; sole proprietors receive this coverage at no charge.
If you practice additional disciplines, coverage for multiple disciplines should be purchased. If you require Multidisciplinary Clinic Insurance, please complete the appropriate section of the application.
Property Insurance
Property Insurance helps cover the cost to repair or rebuild contents, equipment, stock and even your building after fire, theft, vandalism and many other types of losses. Your practice can continue with as little disruption as possible.
Example: A pipe bursts in your office and your equipment and client files are destroyed. The policy will pay the replacement cost for the property damaged or destroyed.
Cyber Insurance
Covers your business' liability for a data breach involving sensitive customer information.
Equipment Breakdown
Also known as Boiler & Machinery Insurance, this policy will protect against many electrical and mechanical breakdown losses not covered by Property Insurance. Damage to machinery or computer equipment from such causes as mechanical failure, electrical short circuits, and arcing are among the perils insured.
Business Interruption Insurance
Pays for regular business expenses that still continue even after a covered claim, and pays extra expenses incurred to rent premises and equipment so that you can continue to practice while repairs take place after the loss.
Crime Insurance
Protects you from crime losses such as employee theft, robbery, forgery, extortion and computer fraud not covered under other policies. A Third Party Extension can be added to protect against allegations of theft from a patient while in your office or during a home visit.
D&O Insurance
Protects Directors and Officers against liabilities they may incur in carrying out their corporate duties and functions while managing the affairs of the corporation.
Extended Reporting Period / Run Off Coverage
Coverage can be provided to show individuals who are suspending or discontinuing their practice.
