The anatomy of an ideal getaway
Whether they are headed to sandy beaches, volunteering at an elephant sanctuary or expanding their culinary palates abroad, Americans have very diverse opinions on what makes for an ideal vacation – and research from Aon Affinity Travel Practice proves it.
The vast majority of Americans – 60 percent – yearn for fun in the sun on a perfect getaway. Others want:
- All-inclusive resort/cruise – 49 percent
- Cultural trip – 36 percent
- Spa vacation – 30 percent
- Voluntourism – 13 percent
The research also analyzed which continent has the destinations Americans would most want to visit on their ideal vacation. Europe topped that list – 38 percent of Americans would want to hop the pond – though a sizable number (25 percent) would stick closer to home and seek out their ideal destination in North America. Australia is also a prime destination – 14 percent would vacation there – though fewer Americans would consider a trip to the remaining four continents to be the locale of their ideal getaway:
- South America – eight percent
- Asia – seven percent
- Africa – six percent
- Antarctica – two percent
“The type of ideal vacation and the location of that getaway is influenced by a whole host of factors, including age, gender and outside influences like financing the trip or crime rates in the destination of choice,” said Beth Godlin, president of Aon Affinity’s Travel Practice. “But it’s interesting to see this big picture breakdown to get a sense from the industry perspective on where and how consumers’ tastes are shifting.”
So what’s the Aon Travel Takeaway from these findings? Godlin says: “Consumers often get wrapped up in the excitement of planning their ideal getaway – a trip that people may have saved up for and looked forward to for years in the making. Those carefully laid plans and eagerness to hit the road can all come crashing down if something unexpected happens, so prepare accordingly and put protections in place to safeguard your travel dreams.”
