Over the last year, rail travel has made a steady comeback – blending romance and nostalgia with modern amenities to deliver a unique, unexpected way to experience the country. Unlike a road trip, train travel eliminates the extra stress that comes with driving, gas and GPS systems – plus, the views and experience are unparalleled. That’s why rail enthusiasts and advocates often say, “after you take a train, you’ll never take a road trip by car again.”
Ready for your cruise on rail? Take a look at our list of North American routes that are sure to spark inspiration for your travels this year!
- Downeaster: Running from Boston to Brunswick, this slow, charming route has a maximum speed of just 80 mph. While it’s not the fastest train around, it is certainly the homiest. Riders have described it as having a cozy atmosphere that “tucks you in.” Originally, the Downeaster was terminated in the 1960s, but recently 90,000 residents petitioned for the reopening to restore the town’s community roots. This ride takes you through the beautiful New England scenery of red barns, green fields and white steeples. Great for shorter distance travel!
- Canada Coast to Coast: Amtrak categorizes this route as a classic for good reason. This picturesque experience starts in the sleepy seaside town of Halifax and ends in Vancouver, with an option to then travel up north to Alaska. The variation in landscape is awe-inspiring as you coast past wildflower meadows, oceans, Rocky Mountains and rivers. Not to mention, French-speaking Quebec will make you feel like you just stopped off in the French Alps. Visit major cities like Montreal and Toronto and see once-in-a-lifetime sites like Niagara Falls and the Canadian plains. Be sure to keep an eye out the window for wildlife like moose and deer.
- Southwest Chief: If the vast open landscape of the southwest is more your speed, try the Southwest Chief running from Chicago to Los Angeles. See the mesmerizing expanse of the American West through eight states including Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The allure of wheat fields, ranches, missions, pueblos, mountains and deserts will not disappoint. As you progress through canyons and passages only a few feet wider than the train itself, you will take in pristine vistas that you would not see from the highway!
- The Crescent: The American South holds historical depth and vibrant beauty that is unmatched. This unique route, traveling from New York to New Orleans, might not be what comes to mind when you think of train travel. However, you will be pleasantly surprised as you pass through vineyards, tobacco fields and wooded areas with rushing rivers. Experience southern charm on this unexpected route as you stop in towns like Greenville, Atlanta, Charlottesville and Birmingham.
- California Zephyr: The Rockies are undoubtedly one of America’s most glorious gems. Journey along the same route as the Forty-Niners during the Gold Rush, climbing through breathtaking mountain ranges. Not only will you be coursing through the snowy Sierra Nevadas, but you will also experience the great plains of Nebraska and Denver. The amazing change in scenery will keep you on your toes. Starting from Chicago and ending in San Francisco, you will pass through the heart of America. Although this route seems similar to the Southwest Chief, you’ll be amazed by the difference in terrain and environment. Route highlights include the Utah Desert, Donner Lake and the Colorado River.
