24/7 Access – The On-Call Travel Insurance Claims Process
Jul 19, 2018 | Aon
Just like filing taxes, when it comes to filing a travel insurance claim, being fully prepared before you get started can help expedite the process. The good news is that the submission process has become much more accessible online and by mobile. And still, if you need to talk to a real person about your issue, there’s an avenue for that as well.
“Travelers shouldn’t make any assumptions when it comes to their claims or claims questions,” said Beth Godlin, president Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “Connect with your insurance provider directly to get guidance about documentation, learn about the process or even get advice for how to handle a current situation. Support is available 24/7.”
No matter the scenario, document everything. The more documentation, the better. The insurance company will need proof of expenses, names of tour operators, dates, etc. to process the claim. And this proof needs to be shared quickly, typically within 90 days, in order for a claim to be paid. Luckily, this can be as easy as taking a photograph of a receipt or physician’s statement and submitting it to your insurance provider.
The experts at Aon Affinity Travel Practice share this advice for the types of materials travelers should save or keep handy in the event of a claim:
- Receipts or bills for all travel expenses
- Proof of payments or deposits
- Copies of unused tickets
- Explanation of diagnosis from a doctor or a physician’s statement
- Proof from airline that baggage was delayed
Because the claims process has become so much more accessible, you may be making a claim while you’re still traveling. Be sure to provide your insurance company with the best way to reach you during your holiday as you may not have consistent access to your email or mobile phone. Also keep your reference number handy so you can easily check back in on the progress of the claim.
