Smart Ways To Safeguard Spring Break Travel

Mar 26, 2019 | Aon

Getting the family ready for a much-anticipated spring break trip is no small feat – there are activities to plan, tickets to book and suitcases to pack. With a lengthy list of to-dos and excitement running high, thinking about and planning for all the things that can go wrong isn’t typically a top priority. But it’s important to consider how you can safeguard your plans. Here are four tips:

  1. Protect your home. Sharing updates about your adventures on social media is a great way to keep your network of family and friends in the know, but it also can backfire if that information is in the wrong hands. Ask a neighbor to check in on your home while you’re away; seek a trusted person to check your mail, packages and newspaper deliveries (or put them on hold); and employ the home security measures you have at your disposal.

  1. Protect your health. No one wants to get sick – or have an accident – while on vacation; but it happens. It could be a minor issue that’s resolved quickly, or it could be more severe and require medical attention or even an emergency evacuation. For these reasons, travelers -- particularly those heading abroad or to a remote location -- need to understand if their current medical insurance would cover any care or even emergency evacuation required during their trip, so they can obtain the right supplementary coverage.

  1. Protect your belongings. Particularly for international spring break travelers, ask about in-room safes for your passport, money and other personal belongings. Before you leave, make photocopies of your passport, license, healthcare card and credit cards you’re bringing on your trip. Zip one set up in a plastic bag to tuck into your carry-on and save one at home just in case the originals are lost or stolen.

  1. Protect your investment. When traveling as a family, with more people in the party to worry about, it’s wise to explore travel protection plans. They can provide reimbursement of non-refundable expenses if you’re forced to cancel a trip for a covered reason, like an injury or unexpected illness that requires medical attention.

“Spring break trips are a great opportunity for families to enjoy time together, and a lot of work usually goes into the planning to make the trip memorable,” said Beth Godlin, president, Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “However, even the best laid plans can go awry, making thoughtful planning crucial to help families maximize and preserve the family travel experience.”
