Three Spring Break Travel Risks Savvy Travelers Should Understand

Mar 25, 2019 | Aon

Spring break trips are second only to summer vacations as the most popular time of the year for families to travel, according to the Family Travel Association’s U.S. Family Travel Survey. So as family pack their bags for a much-anticipated getaway, they should also make sure they are staying up-to-speed on the most common risks that could alter their travel plans:

  1. Inclement weather – spring weather is unpredictable. Severe storms, floods and tornadoes can materialize quickly, potentially wreaking havoc on infrastructure and posing a risk of injury. The impact of such weather is felt all the more acutely when you are away from home. While accurately forecasting the weather is challenging at best, NOAA’s temperature and precipitation seasonal maps are a starting point for planning travel around the weather.

  1. Region-specific risks – for families booking a trip abroad, it’s imperative to be aware of high-risk conditions in certain destinations. Civil unrest, terrorism, and crime are serious concerns that savvy travelers need to be informed about before booking and embarking on an international trip. The U.S. State Department has great resources – such as this interactive map – and up-to-the-minute information on current travel advisories and warnings for U.S. travelers.

  1. Health concerns – certain travel destinations, particularly select international locales, require extra due diligence and planning to remain safe and healthy. Water purity, disease outbreaks, region-specific vaccines and avoiding certain local foods are some examples of what to be cognizant of when making the trek. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention features a plethora of information on specific travel-related health risks and tips on staying healthy on the go.

“April showers, crime, a disease outbreak – these are all risks that are outside of travelers’ control,” said Beth Godlin, president, Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “Couple this with the very fixed window of spring break travel, and it’s all the more important for families to travel smart and protect their trip. The added peace of mind can help maximize every precious moment of a family vacation.”
